Displacement is the first solo exhibit of multidisciplinary artist Emilia Wilson. Wild, intuitive palette knife and brush strokes form conceptual imagery on the canvas, exposing Emilia's experimentation with line, shape, colour and her own identity. A series of tapestries composed of recycled fabrics of various textures and patterns make the transition from abstract to concrete imagery and depict re-imagined scenes from Emilia's travels as well as her anxious tendencies. In addition to these works, a collection of vividly-coloured photographic images of the grungy back alleyways of Vancouver evoke raw, visceral emotion from the observer. Emilia's work, inspired by the last five years of her travels, as well as her personal battle with mental health, sparks essential conversations and meaningful thoughts towards those living with mental health diagnoses and the continuous upheaval and instability that comes with having one.
