As an alternative space, Black Cat Artspace doesn't have to answer to any particular set of aesthetics or rules, and as a result has held a wide variety of shows, in a number of mediums grace the walls over the past 6 and a half years.
The Salon of Inclusiveness is a playful and positive take on the Salon des Refusés. In 1863 two thirds of paintings submitted for the Paris Salon were refused by the conservative French Academy. Rejected work included that by artists such as Courbet, Édouard Manet, Camille Pissaro and Johan Jongkind, whose work didn’t align with traditional tastes. So many artists protested this vast rejection, that a new exhibition was organized – the ‘Salon des
Refusés’, held in another part of the Palais de Industrias. The attention from this event undermined the French Academy and served to legitimize the emerging forms of avant-garde art.
